La Cocina de Mama “Mama’s Kitchen”

A community often described and known as “foodtopia,” Asheville has also made the top ten lists for most food insecure cities in the nation. Hunger stalks the streets of our city. Food deserts abound. People are struggling to access/afford healthy nutritious food. The beautiful foodways that bring people together are being uprooted and lost.

La Cocina de Mamá is a culturally celebratory food truck and mobile kitchen bringing fresh, healthy food to BIPOC and low wealth communities and empowering parents, grandparents, and mentors to hand down indigenous, African American, Latinx, and Appalachian food traditions to to the next generation. La Cocina de Mama/Mama’s Kitchen is a community-centered way to celebrate and pass on culinary traditions and bring people together around intersectional tables.

La Cocina de Mamá/Mama’s Kitchen has been created to honor Queen Mother, Maggie Belle Gladden who was a major part of our BeLoved family and loved to share home cooked meals and African/African American foodways. She was never happier than when she was in the kitchen at BeLoved sharing love through food! This project deeply honors her spirit as we share food, welcome strangers, visit in places of struggle, and to work toward the beloved community together.
